Before you sign off and make the final payment, use this checklist to make sure the job is complete. Check that:
- The work done meets the standards spelled out in the contract.
- Ensure the written warranties for materials and workmanship.
- Ensure that you have proof that all subcontractors and suppliers have been paid.
- Ensure that the job site has been cleaned up and cleared of excess materials, tools and equipment.
- Inspected and approved the completed work only if confirms to the standards as in the contract.
Where to Complain
If a problem arises then try to solve it with the contractor. Most of the problems can be resolved at this level. A constant follow up of the problem resolution is necessary, it can be done through phone calls. A written conversation through a letter posted by certified mail will be advantageous as you will have an additional document in your support if the dispute is not resolved at this level. Also, request a return receipt. That’s your proof that the company received your letter. Keep a copy of your files.
If you can’t get satisfaction, consider contacting the following organizations for further information and help:
- State and local consumer protection offices.
- Your state or local Builders Association and/or Re-modelers Council.
- Your local Better Business Bureau.
- Action line and consumer reporters. Check with your local newspaper, TV, and radio stations for contacts.
- Local dispute resolution programs.
